I do not know who is being quoted here, since I haven't been following this thread, but this statement is almost certainly false, in part because it almost certainly grossly overestimates how much "serious" literature Americans wrote 50 or 100 or 150 years ago. The books which 100s of thousands of college students read every year (regardless of the silly grousing of their professors) almost certainly amount to more reading in a lifetime (even if they never read another book after graduating -- and paperback sales suggest otherwise) than would have been true of more than a very small number of people 100 years ago.
