only a small elite who needs to do business with english speaking businessmen will have to talk english. The chinese periphery, just like the german periphery, the russian periphery, the hindu periphery, the spanish periphery, the arab periphery will go on speaking the main language of the periphery. ---- Yep. Millions of people who have lived all their lives in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, etc., can't speak Uzbek or Kazakh. They are monolingial Russian-speakers. My ex-girlfriend lived in Kazakhstan for 25 years and she can't speak a word of the language. She didn't have to. People in non-Russian countries in the CIS all watch Russian TV and get their news from Russian sources, which are considered more trustworthy. The mother of a friend of mine in Lviv learned about the airshow disaster there in 2002 by -- watching Russian TV, even though it occurred in the city in which she lived! Ukrainian TV didn't report it for a day.

Ukraine recently passed a law restricting use of the Russian language on television on the grounds that it was "extinguishing Ukrainian."
