Gorbachev to attend Reagan funeral

MOSCOW, June 8 (Reuters) - Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev will attend the funeral of Ronald Reagan, his partner in ending decades of Cold War in the 1980s, an aide to Gorbachev said on Tuesday.

Vladimir Polyakov said Gorbachev, who has close personal relations with the former U.S. president's family, would travel to Washington DC for Friday's ceremony.

In 1985 the anti-Communist Reagan and the newly elected Soviet Communist party leader Gorbachev signed a breakthrough declaration in Geneva, stating that the global superpowers should never engage in nuclear war.

Gorbachev described Reagan on Saturday as a great leader who dared to strike a deal with the country he described as an "Evil Empire." The deal created a better international political climate and paved the way for nuclear arms cuts on both sides.

Reagan praised Gorbachev's "perestroika" reform for making Soviet society more open and democratic when he visited Moscow in 1988, a year before he ended his second presidential term.
