INTD 1015 J.R.R.Tolkien and the Theology of Middle Earth Course Reference Number: 10205
We will read and discuss the Middle Earth fiction of J.R.R.Tolkien as well as several essays by and about the late Oxford professor. Particular attention will be given to the manner in which Tolkien's theology and philosophy are conveyed through his fantasy literature. Sample topics include: how do ideas expressed in Tolkien's famous essay, On Fairy-Stories find expression in fiction? What does The Hobbit have to say about fate and free will? What does The Silmarillion suggest about human freedom and creativity? Students will be expected to read The Silmarillion before the first day of class. LIT (M. Dickerson)
