This is a good point. The archives don't "speak for themselves"; they have meaning because they're part of our way of life, so exposure to the texts by themselves won't help much. I guess Gary's plan to send the alien to the Gap is more useful.

(My mistake here reflects the cultural immersion of an academic in our society: "You wanna understand X? Read this and that!")
