Trying to argue people out of strongly held beliefs is futile. We can improve science education -- especially education which explains why it is that scientific knowledge works much better than believing that God makes things go. Develop more ways of helping people to feel secure and lead satisfying lives without needed a Big Daddy in the sky to cuddle up to. Beyond that, allow the social processes that have brought secularization this far to continue. Even the U.S. population is gradually becoming more secular, though at much too slow a pace.

Politically, organize the progressive side of the population (religious as well as secular) to keep the Know-Nothings from getting more power than they have now.

Pray to St. Charles (Darwin).
