well, after all that, i'm afraid i have to agree with you. the bill bennett endorsement is pretty damning. i guess the reason i didn't think of him as in the same category as a helms (or bennett!) was that he hasn't *yet had the opportunity* to run sanctimonious campaign against, say, robert mapplethorpe and the nea.
indeed, one half-suspects that ryan is intimately acquainted with mapplethorpe's work . . .
