We here this argument a lot. Unfortunately for the November 2, 2004 election support (more specifically VOTING for a Green Party candidate, or other 3rd party person for president) for the Green Party can't be considered to be a useful tool in defeating both parties. There is still a slight chance that it could help Bush and the Republicans with their National Right to Work Law, anti-choice judges, Social Security privatizing plans, nuclear war plans, permanent war plans, torture memos, anti-affirmative action judges etc. etc. etc. in hand.
As to the purpose of a third party...presumably a progressive/labor/socialist party (depending on your point of view) understands objective reality and isn't out to make things worse for most people and is organizing in localities and for a time when their efforts are more viable and less likely to hand the system over to a Bush administration that isn't worried too much about being reelected.
