IBM plans regional research hub in Asia

PTI

JERUSALEM: Computer major IBM's research laboratories in India, Israel, China and Japan are to work on creating a 'synergy', harnessing the advantages of each one of these labs in an effort that can lead to the emergence of a regional research hub.

Representatives of the four branches of IBM are currently meeting in India at a conference dubbed, 'IBM Asia Pacific Research Synergy Conference' on working out ways to achieve this goal that will boost the company's product portfolio through "collaborative innovation", company sources said here.

Each one of these labs have certain acclaimed area of specialisation, the sources said, adding while Israel can contribute through the knowledge acquired in search, storage and verification technologies, the Indian lab is noted for its specialisation in speech recognition, grid computing and bio-informatics.

Similarly the Japanese lab has been working successfully on storage protection, security and instant Java compilers and China on opening source systems and wireless technologies.

The areas of collaborative innovation are likely to include specific technologies for call centres and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) operations, open source enterprise systems and search engines for structured and unstructured data in enterprises, they said.

Collaboration between the research labs in these countries is not completely unknown but the current enterprise will broaden its scope, catering to the needs of a much bigger market, the sources added.
