This article, like a lot of writing that talks about
American racism comparitively, fails to recognize that
American racism is a combination of both biological,
cultural, and economic hatred. Black people especially have
never simply been hated or oppressed because of skin color,
and I would argue that for the majority of the time, "race"
has had little to do with it, but an aversion and fear of
our ways of being in the world was equally part of the
problem if not more so.
Race is just a signifier for ideology, religion, economics,
culture, and a whole bunch of other stuff that white folks
didn't like about us. Skin color had nothing to do with it.
