I think this is actually the rule rather than the exception in the age of globalization. Most liberation movements (defined in the most formal and value free way) got substantial monetary support from an ethic or religious diapora. The most colorful in New York used to be the Eritrians raising money for three different fronts. On the Indian subcontinent, before the Hindutva, the Sikhs got support from their brethren in the US. And it's not only from America. Pre 9/11, the Tamil Tigers got substantial and crucial support from their brethen in reasonable, pacifist Canada for decades, and Ocalan's PCC got similarly substantial support from Kurds in Europe.

But to be fair, people just don't do it for violent groups. The same pattern holds for almost all indigenous human rights groups too.
