Um, I think the only one of those that really was a colonization attempt was the Roman invasion (and it was, of course, successful). The others were raiders who then later settled, with the exception of 1066. William was a claimant to the throne on his own recognizance, not at France's behest (which didn't have much of a central authority at the time).
