From Nixon's Shadow by David Greenberg, published last yr. Pgs. 91-92, chapter on the New Left. "It's impossible to say when radicals began whispering about Nixon's plans to cancel the 1972 presidential election but, the rumor first appeared in print in the Portland Oregonian, the Staten Island Advance and other Newhouse-owned newspapers. According to the item the admin. had asked the RAND Corp. to study whether , 'rebellious factions using force or bomb threats would make it unsafe to hold the election.' Further paragraphs relate how Ron Rosenbaum at the Village Voice, The Nation, Los Angeles Free Press and Scanlans picked up the story.

I have a copy of Scanlans (that had to be printed in Canada as no US printer would do the job) that has dozens of pgs. of short summaries of bombings and other violence in the US in the 60's.
