No, you weren't missing something, and no, Sharpton's not a buffoon. He was probably the smartest guy in the Democratic primary field and he was the only one who consistently engaged substantive issues. He's also got good political instincts. Unlike the other candidates, he never seemed thrown by a question, always seem to have a considered and often witty response to questions posed by debate moderators or reporters. Were it not for all the baggage he's carrying around from an earlier life (Tawana Brawley etc), he might have been taken more seriously by the media. Not seriously enough to have a chance, mind you: he's too far to the left for that. But he might have nudged the debate in a more progressive direction, buttressing some of Dean's and Edwards's rhetoric.

Sharpton is the candidate with whom I am in most agreement on the issues; but he has not demonstrated any executive competence over his mostly honorable career as a progressive rabble-rouser Quite aside from the fact that he could never get elected, his managerial skills are nil.

Al Sharpton ?

watching some of the debates he seemed to be the only one voicing any sense, was I missing something or is he really the buffoon the media treat him as ?
