The analysis of Peter Sloterdijk, in his _Critique_of_Cynical_Reason_, would come in handy here.
To make a long story short, he distinguishes two strands of cynicism, on of the top, which he calls "*c*ynicism", and one of the bottom, which he calls "*k*ynicism".
Diogenes is kynical, Goering is cynical -- and cynical is the attitude of the left that things have to get worse before they get better.
