Freepers put Berg's father, Michael on their enemies list last month because he signed an anti-war petition. Several apparently contacted the Coast Guard and Navy to rat out a couple of people who identified themselves as part of the CG and Navy.

It's possible (though how probable it is I can't say) this action created a grapevine effect which resulted in Berg being detained in Iraq, first by Iraqi police and later by the Pentagon in one of its ad-hoc gulags.

I'm motivated to write this by an NPR report I listened to this morning during which Michael Berg unequivocally placed the ultimate blame for his son's murder on Rumsfeld since he's responsible for creating (or contributing to the creation of) this detention program. Michael apparently already held a low opinon of the Secretary of Defense as evidenced by his filing a lawsuit against the DoD which accuses Rumsfeld of holding his son illegally.

Reportedly, after being initially arrested by Iraqis on the CPA payroll on or about April 6 2004, Berg was held for approximately 13 days at a US controlled facility where he was questioned by military officials and FBI agents.

As we know, American/Iraqi hostilities increased during those weeks and a kidnapping spree began. After his release, Berg was again detained, this time by insurgents or terrorists or whatever you want to call them and, after some time in their custody, was brutally killed.

The NPR report stated these facts but, as is the custom of American journalism, performed no follow-through by going directly to the Pentagon and asking why an American small business owner (Berg was a radio transmission expert) was arrested and questioned.

Factoring in this freeper business suggests some unpleasant possibilities.
