WASHINGTON (AFP) - Battered by the Iraq (news - web sites) war, President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s public approval rating has hit an all-time low, while support for his Democratic rival John Kerry (news - web sites) has surged ahead of the November 2 election, new polls showed.
Only 41 percent of those surveyed approve of the job Bush is doing as president, while 52 percent disapprove, according to a CBS News poll. Two weeks ago, 44 percent approved and one year ago the figure was two-thirds.

The CBS poll showed that in a head-to-head dust up, 49 percent of registered voters said they would back Kerry in the presidential contest, while 41 percent said they would vote for Bush.
Support for Kerry rose from 46 percent in an April poll, while it has declined from 44 percent for Bush in April.
According to ABC/Washington Post, if Bush, Kerry and independent Ralph Nader (news - web sites) contest the November 2 election, the Republican president gets 46 percent support, Kerry 46 percent and Nader four percent.
With just Kerry and Bush, it is a statistical dead heat with 49 percent for Kerry and 47 percent for Bush.
