Karl Radek (always noted as one of the better witticists in the upper reaches of the Comintern) said at the Seventeenth Congress of the CPSU in '34, just a few yrs. before he was to be a victim himself of the Purges said of free speech, "All we have gone through in the last years has shown how, having destroyed the freedom of the press and all other bourgeois freedoms, the working class under the Party's leadership has erected such freedoms for the creative activity of the masses of workers and peasants that the world has never seen before."
