He's not obsessing about the "issue of lawyers aiding terrorists." He's claiming that there's little political sense in making the legal tribulations of such lawyers a cause celebre. Loudly and publicly defend an odious political figure who is railroaded in a clearly illegal manner? By all means. However, unless you're the person's lawyer, probably best to turn your attention and focus your efforts elsewhere if the legal issues are murky (of course, sorting through murky legal issues often has independent importance).
