conservatives are so far ahead in the propaganda war and the left so much in a defensive position, that a conservative-leaning friend on a motorcycle mailing list, actually thought that the word 'liberal' meant something bad outright, and did not even choose to consult a dictionary. he was utterly amazed when i posted the dictionary definition and challenged its veracity!
