[lbo-talk] Jews & Iraq

Well, who that's sane thinks it's a Zionist frolic? It's an oil-grab and a power-grab, with a public cover story claiming it's about terrorism.

Meanwhile, who that's sane denies that Israel's intransigence and violence produces 1/3 or 1/2 of the fuel for Islamic intransigence and violence, which provides the cover story? Who thinks you can end Islamic terrorism without ending Israeli terrorism?

Another question: How do those Iraq numbers compare with Jewish support for the Vietnam War?

I don't equate Israel and Jewishness, nor do I think Jews are any more responsible than non-Jews for this war, but isn't it vital to confront Israel? Isn't it vital to be clear about the forces at play in calling for such a confrontation? Hasn't Israel now long since spent the political capital that could once win it automatic loyalty from Jews? Hasn't it long since become a huge menace to millions of Jews?

Fascinating little fact reported in Lieven's America Right Or Wrong: according to a survey by the American Jewish Cmte, 54% of American Jews opposed the war in Iraq, and 43% supported it - almost 20 points below the national average support, which was 62%. Makes it a little harder to paint the war as a Zionist frolic. ___________________________________ http://mailman.lbo-talk.org/mailman/listinfo/lbo-talk
