The real shift is that both the Republican and Democratic Parties have moved to the right on the class struggle front and that both have moved to the left on the social and cultural struggle front (concerning equality between genders, races, sexual orientations, etc.), in keeping with the economic shift (e.g., the end of the post-World War 2 boom, stagflation, intensification of international competition, etc.).
