Clinton took 152 days of vacation during two terms, up 'til December 1999. Shrub? By 9/11 he'd already taken 96 days of vacation. Back of the envelope: If Shrub were to have continued apace, he would have taken off 128 days/year or 512 days off in four yrs.
Alas, in this alternative world, it would have been a miserable failure, dick-limping moment for ol' Shrubya. Daddyo (Bush Pere) took off 543 days during his presdinency!
(To me, the issue is: Shrub took off loads of time during major crises. Asks everyone else to sacrifice but can't be bothered to do same.)
I don't think people in their world (Kerry and Shrubya--and even their advisors) could even "get it." They think they deserve it, more than ordinary workers. They think they work hard, in jobs they can never turn off. They think they're different.
On another note: We had another member of Testosterone Central over last night. His older brother is in the service. I asked him how he'd feel about a Kerry presidency after the debate.
"No way. He voted against funding the military."
*sigh* He just shoke his head "no" when I retorted that Shrubya tried to cut combat pay.
When pressed, it was clear other son didn't know what he was talking about. He couldn't even say the key words: "I actually voted for the eighty-seven billion dollars before I voted against it." Heck, he couldn't even say "eighty-seven billion dollars." I love "other son" like my own son, but dang! It is really hard to talk to him about this because I don't want to make him feel stupid, something this society and our education system has drilled into him in a multitude of ways.
I guess this is the result of the ferocious negative ad campaign in limpdick. The repubs have put huge resources into this. It seems like every time a news segment closes, it swings directly into one of these commercials where you hear Kerry saying the infamous words. You can barely tell the difference between news segment and commercial -- which is nothing new with commercials, but it's jarring nevertheless.
I fell asleep for about twenty minutes of the debates. Yeah, the consensus is that Kerry kicked ass but people still like Shrubya.
I'm glad they went ahead with the split screen on MSNBc, though I guess not all of the stations did this? That had to be Shrubya's Achilles' heel. Smirking, petulant chimp. Although, I wondered how people responded to Kerry's scribbling. Russ Whatshisface from NBC was on Imus this a.m., mocking Kerry: "I wonder what he was writing. Was he doodling? I'd like to get my hands on those notes."
Are these drooling toadies totally stupe or what? Kerry was doing what you're supposed to do. You take note of what the opp says, scribble it down so you'll remember it, and make a counterpoint. What is it with the cheap shots? This is a shock to Russ Whatshisface? Jeez.
