Kind of like the telephone when there were party lines. Folks overheard 
things, but for the most part is was accidental. Emergency calls got 
thru if someone explained the need to those that they shared with. It 
brought people together and had some cultural values that I absorbed as 
ethics.

But they didn't have phone sex billable to your credit card.
