NEW FOOD FIRST FACT SHEET
Where Do Bush and Kerry Stand on Hunger, Homelessness, Poverty and Healthcare?
While presidential candidates Bush and Kerry prepare for Friday's debate, many voters are not aware of their positions on critical domestic issues. As war and terrorism dominate daily headlines, news of millions at home suffering from hunger, homelessness, poverty and lack of health care are scarcely mentioned in campaign speeches.
Food First/Institute for Food and Development Policy has just released "Hunger, Homlessness, Poverty and Healthcare: Bush and Kerry--Where Do They Stand?" This Fact Sheet, based on news articles, government agency reports, humanitarian agencies, and each candidate's web site, summarizes what Bush and Kerry have done and promise to do to address domestic issues.
In August, the new U.S. Census population survey for 2004 found that since 2000, 4.3 million Americans had fallen into poverty, 3.9 million more suffer from hunger, homelessness continues to rise and Americans are losing their health care coverage at record levels. Not all these trends are limited to the poor. The middle class became the largest group to lose health care coverage over the last three years, the Fact Sheet reports.
