[lbo-talk] Newsom

the usual bay area demo...good on social issues but very much pro-business (he founded a bunch of wine shops and restaurants).

for example he wouldn't sign anything stating his support of the SF minimum wage until its passage was assured towards the end of the campaign. he likes to take money away from homeless people (care not cash). to his credit he's trying to raise business taxes by about $30M this cycle, but that's only a small fraction of what we need to cover the gap for basic services privided by the city and county of SF - we had big cuts in public health this past budget cycle, some of which were aggravated by the governator.

his political method is to be high-minded in pubic but be pretty ruthless behind the scenes, a la willie brown but with much less flair and skill. he's a details guy as far as municipal governance goes so there exists, at least, room for the policy discussion that you couldn't have with willie. his department heads don't fear independent policy making either.

I was just reading about Newsom in The New Yorker. What do Bay Areans (*snort*) think about him?
