yeah, i was afraid about that real world answer. for instance, in the US, the beliefs/objectives (even in theory) seem to be derived from the words of a few rich, dead, white guys? also, what if no minimal set of shared beliefs or objectives can be arrived at? what if individual rights and common good (to just pick two at random) are in some sense contradictory? are there methods to resolve or reduce them?

ok, but my question is a bit different. let me explain: by well-defined, i was thinking of something similar to an axiomatic system with atomic rules of inference. it seems something close would be required for judges to be able to blindly apply the law to available evidence.
