that site also has an opinion poll asking "which ticket impressed you the most?" Kerry-Edwards 51% Bush-Cheney - 49%.

That is quite impressive, indeed, given the fact that this just after the repug convention and the conservative leaning of MSNBC.

One way of looking at the 2004 presidential campaign is a kulturkampf between the species Boobus Americanus represented by Bush, and more urbane folk courted by Kerry. What's particularly interesting about it is that even some 50 years ago, the Boobus Americanus would have won by a landslide, but today it is clearly loosing ground - as evidenced by the split of popular vote in 2000 - when Al "the Urbane" Gore got a slight majority over George "Bobbitt" Bush.

If this observation is accurate, Kerry will most likely win in 2004 (unless GOP rigs the election via electronic voting machines). It is so not because most people support Kerry's political program (which they may or may not), but because they are more likely to identify with Kerry's urbane style than with gutter populism and anti-intellectualism espoused by Bush.

In other words, while there are still a lot of Bobbitts in the bowels of America, the heart and the brain of this country tends to have aesthetic preference for more urbane values and forms of political discourse. That will likely make Kerry prevail, the shortfalls of his campaign notwithstanding.
