Gypsies are not Roma (not the way I'm using the word,
anyway). Roma is an ethnicity. Gypsy is a cultural
lifestyle frequentlly associated with Roma. And the
cultural complex that Westerners associated with Roma
and was romanticized in The Hunchback of Notre Dame --
dancing, trading, fortune-telling, etc. -- is as much
a part of the past in Eastern Europe as Jewish
settlements, and for the same reason.
