I propose a compromise:

There is a political vacuum in the U.S. that is currently being filled by right-wingers; however, the fact that this is the case is not in itself sufficient evidence that the country as a whole is swinging to the right.

This is partly because capitalism and right-wing cultural values are incompatible, and partly because there is such a thing as historically shaped consciousness which makes it very hard to go backward.

The countries that have gone "backward" so far -- Afghanistan under the Taliban, Algeria, some of the Stans, Iran, parts of India -- etc. have largely been regions with traumatized populations and ruled by goons financed and armed by others.
