RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi security forces clashed with suspected militants in the southern Shifa district of the capital Riyadh on Sunday, security sources said.
A security source in the world's biggest oil exporting nation said police had identified wanted suspects in the area who opened fire at them. Police fired back and the suspects tried to flee.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or arrests.
Al Qaeda militants have since 2003 waged a campaign of suicide bombings and shootings in the kingdom aimed at driving Westerners out and hurting the economy and oil industry.
A Frenchman was shot dead in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah on Sunday in the second such killing this month by suspected al Qaeda militants.
Since last May's triple suicide bombings of expatriate housing compounds in Riyadh, more than 150 people, including foreigners, security forces and militants have been killed.
