Chechens Arrested in Murder of Klebnikov
By Nabi Abdullaev Staff Writer Moscow police have arrested two Chechen men on suspicion of involvement in the murder of American journalist Paul Klebnikov, city police chief Vladimir Pronin said Tuesday, in the first sign of a possible breakthrough in the case.
Investigators believe one of three pistols, found when the Chechens were detained in Moscow on Monday night, was used in the killing, Interfax cited Pronin as saying.
Klebnikov was shot outside his office July 9 in an apparent contract hit.
Pronin provided no details on the identities of the detained or on their alleged role in the assassination, saying only that the Chechens had been holding another unidentified man hostage.
