Air quality has improved considerably in Russia since 1991 as the only positive side of the collapse of a lot of heavy industry. Then again it's counterbalanced somewhat in the cities, as there are a lot more cars: 10% of Muscovite families owned a car in 1991. Now it's 50% (with a larger population too!).
