Russian media hails Sino-Indian tie-up

By Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW, APRIL 12. The Russian media has described the establishment of a strategic partnership between India and China as a historic achievement that may dramatically improve bilateral ties and impact Moscow.

"Leaving behind them past recriminations, the erstwhile nuclear rivals are building a `friendship bridge' across the Himalayas," the Kommersant said.

According to the Novyie Izvestia, Beijing appeared to be trying to wean India from the United States alarmed by Washington's moves to court India as a counterbalance to its rising power in Asia.

However, another Russian daily believes the new Delhi-Beijing rapprochement will revive Moscow hopes of building a triangle with Delhi and Beijing.

"A full-scope cooperation with India and China is in Russia's interests since our country is far more competitive in Asian markets and Asian politics (than in the West)," the Vremya Novostei said quoting Vladimir Portyakov of the Institute of the Far East.
