It establishes the parallel between the bad 19th century poem with the lines "I want to live by the side of the road / And be a friend to man" and my variation of it after being on this list for a couple of years, "I want to live in a house on the side of the road / And sneer at the fools going by.

Someone is sure to moan, "But it ISN'T either/or . . . ."
