The hostage-takers were (presumably) there trying to reignite the Ossete-Ingush civil war. Thay wanted as much ethnic-hatred-sparking bloodshed as possible.
Kudos to both the Ingush ans Ossetes that they failed. A peaceful future for the Caucasus relies on such people.
