Both Marx and Bakunin called themselves socialists because a classless (thus State-less) society was their strategic goal. Marx wrote CAPITAL and Bakunin translated it into Russian; so at least among some revolutionaries, there was an idea of just what kind of political-economy it was, which was to be transcended. A lot of this critique political-economy and common understanding of socialism was displaced by "realists" in the 20th Century. As has been pointed out, the tactics of how one gets to a communist society are where socialists tend to differ.
