If actually, existing illegal immigration were REALLY a problem for the U.S. ruling class, it would direct its reps in the State to pass legislation making it a felony to hire people without "proper papers" (however they might be construed). Calling for more border police and building bigger, better border walls are just right-wing populist measures which play toward the creation and legitimation of an ever growing U.S. police State. As the situation stands, illegal immigrants play an important role in maintaining racist, nationalist ideological mind sets amongst a significant portion of the working class and providing a pool of cheap, politically frightened, and quite intelligent labour for the capitalist class to exploit. The conservative social-darwinist right figure that only the brightest and best can get through the random nets which are now being cast to catch non-citizen workers.
