[lbo-talk] Iraqi Independence In Action: Kurds Drill for Oil without Baghdad

What I had in mind was an independent Kurdistand that grew with our military support and could become a magnet for oppressed Kurds. I think rather than invading Iraq and heading straight to Baghdad (which, militarily, was seen to require bombing infrastructure) we could have invaded the South and the North and given the people who already had a real political consensus on living independently from Baghdad a start in building governmnets (as was already developing in Iraqi Kurdistan) and protected the population from Saddam.

This would have necessitated our embracing the Kurdish cause and pissing off the Turks. And since Iraqi Kurdistan will almost certainly become the center of Kurdish resistance at some point, why not nip the problem in the bud by asking our friend Turkey to give up a little territory and asking the Syrians and Iranians (who repress the Kurds terribly) to give up relatively more. With some help from the Azeris and the Turkomen you could start a nice little country that would be a great place to run an oil and gas pipeline to Turkey through. I think with a little pressure and some money spread around everybody goes home happy.
