It's easy to protest female circumcision in africa -- though "circumcision" is a weak term -- "mutilation" or "castration" would be more accurate. After all, circumcision does not excise the penis, it only removes a bit of foreskin ...what is harder is to stop the practice in the U.S., where according to a friend it routinely continues in the case of female infants whose clitoris is deemed too large. Five a day, according to my friend.

I'll find the data if anyone is interested.

Oh, and No, inflicting traumatic experiences on a child's sexual organs does not seem like a good idea. Wish I had thought it through when my son was born. But I was unduly swayed by the endless number of infections I suffered when married to my first, uncircumcised husband.
