<blockquote> In "All the President's Men," their 1974 account of the Watergate scandal, Woodward and Bernstein describe their source as holding an extremely sensitive position in the executive branch, and as one "who could be contacted only on very important occasions." <...> http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/longterm/watergate/deept.htm
If that's correct, it rules Gray out. Donald Segretti also claims he knows DH's identity.
I'm still trying to figure out for whom Bradlee might be writing an early obit. That was the tip from Romenesko at poynter.org , he claims that Bradlee told him personally...
Here's the latest on that front:

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2005 Segretti says George H.W. Bush isn't Deep Throat NBC4 (Los Angeles) Convicted dirty trickster Donald Segretti claims he knows Deep Throat's identity -- Woodstein's source isn't Gerald Ford or George H.W. Bush, he says -- and insists John Dean is wrong about the man being ill. http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/sunday/commentary/la-op-sources6feb06,0,3062317,print.story?coll=la-sunday-commentary
"I am surprised it gets so much press," he says of DT speculation.

I thought I'd heard somewhere that assuming Deep Throat actually existed and that he had all the characteristics ascribed to him by Woodward and Bernstein (the most important of these, of course, being that he was a single individual and not a composite), the person who would have had access to the information they talk about and who could have been physically present at all the times they describe having met with Deep Throat was L. Patrick Gray III, Hoover's immediate successor as head of the FBI.
Is Gray still alive, though? Isn't it a promise by Woodward and Bernstein that they will reveal DT's identity when he dies?
Hunter S. Thompson? Absolutely no way. Buchanan is more plausible than Thompson, but still unlikely in my view. I think a lot of the suspicion it may be Buchanan hinges on the idea of Buchanan as an honest fanatic, somebody who at bottom has some moral scruples. That's a delusion, I think -- Pat Buchanan is a scheming, vindictive, dishonest, wicked lunatic just like Nixon himself was.
