[Interesting comment by Gore Vidal as quoted by Lloyd Grove in the Daily News today, anent C. A. Tripp's book on Lincoln. --CGE]

"Tripp's research as to Lincoln's same-sexual side is startling in its detail, but what is truly fascinating is how little heterosexual experience Lincoln had outside marriage.

"Do I believe him 'gay'? This is a word that is now used to describe millions of people with nothing at all in common other than a preference, often fleeting, for their own sex.

"It's a meaningless category, like compassionate Republican. Lincoln was never meaningless."
