i bothered to do the poll b/c i thought it was hilarious that people often assume that the list is full of academics. in fact, i think most of the people who engage in theoretical discussions probably more likely to be non-academics than the other way around. we are just a bunch of intelligent, well-rounded people!

now, we can do an income poll if anyone's interested. With nearly 20% of list participants unemployed, i'm pretty sure that you will similarly find that plenty of people aren't leading exceptionally 'cushy' lives. i'd also point out that 'cushy' isn't just about income, but about free time and freedom from worrying about losing your job or where you're next check will come from if you're adjuncting or self-employed. People who are self-employed, btw, (who do freelancing) can usually only bill about 25-30 hrs out of a 40 hr week. the rest goes to administration, technical maintenance, bookkeeping, and marketing.
