Michael Bloombeg, mayor of New York, was a life-long Dem, but since he wasn't part of the machine, he could never have gotten a spot on the primary ballot. So he ran as a Republican, spent oodles of his own money, and won. As things go, he's not been too bad. He's getting union endorsements, and the Working Families Party is likely to sit this election out. He has almost nothing to do with the national Republican party, and is governing more or less like a liberal Democrat.
