The Country's nuclear reactors will be able to produce 4500 mw of power by 2007-08, a top official said on Wednesday.

In additional to operating reactors, nine nuclear reactors are under construction under the PAE programme, Dr Anil Kakodkar, head of department of Atomic Energy, said at the Nuclear Fuel complex (NFC) celebrations.

Operating reactors and pressurized reactors under construction together would add up to capacity of 4500 mw by 2007-08, 50 per cent of the targeted 10000 mw, he said.

The Tarapur four unit was seven months ahead of schedule and a few days ago the unit synchronized and is providing electricity to fulfil the gap of demand of electricity in Maharashtra, he said.

He said reaching the targeted goal of 10000 mw by 2011-12, NFC will have to go in accelerated mode. It should target production capacity of 800 tonnes of fuel, he said.

As per a study, by 2050 the nuclear power has to account for 25 per cent share of total power production. The capacity at that point of time is likely to be 2,70,000 mw, he said.

On the occasion, he released the NFC newsletter. Earlier R Kalidas, Chairman and Chief Executive NFC, welcomed N Kondal Rao, first chief Executive. K Balram Murthy, KK Sinha and P Rama Rao, former chairman AERB, were also present.
