The "debate" was primarily about refining proofs for already existing beliefs. The beliefs themselves change over time but not as a result of "evidence" extracted by combing through obscure religious texts and then debated concerning when to apply Papal Infallibility. They change to reflect what society desires of its religions. Religion exists as a way to spread belief. You don't debate things and come to conclusions in any religion. You come to conclusions, and then debate how to prove them.
