CB: "Biblical liberalists" suggests that they are not fundamentalists, I guess. <<<<<>>>>>

'fundamentals' may derive from sacred text content, supported by assertion of literal truth, u.s. protestant fundamentalism preaches creationism ('creation science'/'intelligent design'), book of genesis story re. god creating humans, rejection of darwinian evolution...

however, religious fundamentalism should not be equated with scriptural literalism if for no other reason than sacred texts are comprised of various ideas/doctrines/principles, use of such texts for purpose that, say, u.s. christian conservatives want to use their bible for requires isolating certain features that make for neat/clean/tidy/simple/exact/unambiguous principles and identity (see _fundamentalisms and the state_, marty & appleby (eds.), on this point)...

moreover, while the religiously orthodox ascribe to 'living by the book', fundamentalists 'actively' read sacred texts in ways that fit their politics (called 'dynamic interpretation' in islam), dilemma of different interpretations resolved by appeal to who is doing the interpreting... michael hoover
