Russia fears attacks by Afghan, Pakistani militants
MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that militants from Afghanistan and Pakistan were training for attacks against Russia and former Soviet Central Asia and that they periodically cross into Central Asian territory.
"On the territory of Afghanistan and on the territory adjacent to the Afghan border with Pakistan, training is going on of terrorists, with the participation of Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan ... for conducting terrorist attacks, including on the territory of the Russian Federation," Lavrov said at a joint news conference here.
He said the militants penetrated into the Fergana Valley, which is shared between Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and proposed that Russia and Nato work together with those countries special services "to ensure that such activity is stopped". Lavrov made his allegations in response to a question on why Russia did not support calls for an independent, international investigation of last months violence in Uzbek city of Andijan.
