On 6/24/05, Jim Devine <jdevine03 at gmail.com> quoted: the Marxist journal, New Masses.

By coincidence I have the last bound volume of The New Masses, July 1,1947-Jan. 13, 1948, after which it was merged into Masses and Mainstream, a monthly, checked out of the library. Graphics are excellent, format very similiar to The Nation of that era, circulation was a little over 12 thousand.Sample article title, "Existentialism: Doctrine of Despair, " condemns Sartre as imperialist ideologue."The social function of Jean-Paul Sartre's writings is that of a peculiar 'Trojan Horse' left by reaction in the camp of the progressive forces." Sept. 2, 1947, NM, pg. 6. Chester Himes great novel, "Lonely Crusade, " castigated by Lloyd Brown, issue date Sept. 9, 1947.
