My kids loved them at around age 8-9. A few of them are very good -- The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, which I think is the first one, I can still remember pretty well. Lewis is a good writer and a fine storyteller. He's also a conservative Christian, and the series is deliberately intended as Christian propaganda, not very veiled. But then Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress is not veiled at all, and it is a wonderful book for kids (and grownups), a model of English prose. Lewis is not a bad model either.
